Background:
The first postal rates were established in 1657,by the same Act of British Parliament that set those for the English postal system. However, the Irish postal system was administered from Dublin, even when under the jurisdiction of the British post office. From 1784 to 1831 the Irish Post Office was independent of the British, thereafter, the two systems were closely aligned.
Objective:
From the beginnings of the postal system under British control, this exhibit traces the development of the Irish postal system, from its establishment in 1657, during its independent period from 1784 to 1831, and finally as part of the developing British system at the end of the 19th century. Routes, rates and marking unique to Ireland are emphasized. At times, especially after 1840, the exhibit uses Irish related items to demonstrate aspects of developments common to the British system as a whole.Note: This exhibit went on to win the Grand Prix National at UK International "The Stamp Show 2000" in London England, May 2000.
