The US 1922 Definitive Series: A study of rates & uses

This exhibit demonstrates the uses of the US 1922 Definitive Series (also known as the Fourth Bureau Series)

Selected Highlights:

International Airmail ..........Combined domestic airmail & surface mail

USPOD provided airmail service within Continental US for mail sent by surface from other countries. From August 1, 1928 until July 5, 1932, US airmail service for UPU origin mail
was 4¢ per ounce.

September 13, 1929 Luansyha, Northern Rhodesia - Pasadena
Surface mail
(N. Rhodesia to NY, non-UPU rate): 3 pence (N.Rhodesia)
Airmail (NY to Pasadena, 5¢/oz.): 5¢ (US)

Northern Rhodesia was among only two other UPU- non-member countries (until July 1, 1930). Therefore US airmail service was 5¢, not 4¢. Extra 1¢ was convenience overpayment, since only two-cent booklet stamps were apparently available.

International Airmail ..........Combined domestic airmail & surface mail

USPOD permitted Canadian mail to travel via US airmail, if fees were paid with US stamps.

April 5, 1927 Victoria, British Columbia - Montreal, Quebec
Surface mail (Victoria to Seattle, treaty rate): 2c (Canadian)
Airmail (Seattle to NY, 10¢/oz.):10¢ (US)
Surface Mail (NY to Montreal): ---

Special US - Canada combination airmail rate applied for only 16 weeks
(February - June 1927)

International Airmail ..........Earlier foreign airmail.

Encompassing South America: FAM route 9

December 20, 1934 New York - La Paz, Bolivia
Airmail
(NY to miami to Peru): 40¢/half oz.):40¢
Airmail (Peru to Bolivia.):15¢/half oz.): 15¢

Mail typically traveled via FAM 9 to Peru, then by surface to Bolivia. On May 14, 1932, special air service from Peru to Bolivia was temporarily available at an additional 15¢ charge. FAM 9 carried mail to Peru, then Bolivian domestic air service carried it onward within Bolivia.

Parcel Post - Before June 15, 1925

Prior to June 15, 1925, parcels post to a foreign country depended on specific postal treaties, but the rate was general 12 cents per pound.

Fargo, North Dakota - Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
Parcel Post (1 lb. to Australia, 12¢/lb.): 12¢
