United States Stamp Society (The Bureau Issues Association)
(APS Affiliate #150)70th Anniversary Meeting! The United States Stamp Society (BIA) will celebrate its 70th anniversary at NAPEX 2000. The USSS is the largest society devoted exclusively to the study of stamp and revenue paper issued for use in the United States and its administered areas. Founded in 1930 as the successor to the Philatelic Plate Numbers Association (PPNA), it has published a monthly journal, The U.S. Specialist, continuously since and other philatelic literature considered to be the reference material for those specific subjects. Among these award winning references are the Durland Standard Plate Number Catalog, Pat Paragraphs and French's Encyclopedia of Plate Varieties on U.S. Bureau Printed Stamps.
The USSS (BIA) is THE society for collectors of stamp and revenue paper produced for use in the United States and U.S.-administered areas. Once concerned mainly with the output of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the USSS (BIA) has expanded its coverage to include all U.S. issues, both classics and modern, regardless of the printer. To better reflect this, the name of the organization will be officially changed during the 70th Anniversary meeting, at NAPEX 2000.The society's unique structure contains a series of committees and study groups which allow members to participate directly or use them as an information resource on specific areas of philately such as the Liberty Study group or the Washington-Franklin Heads Issue Committee among others. These groups serve to focus research efforts and produce articles for the society journal. The USSS (BIA) holds an annual membership meeting at one of the major stamp shows throughout various parts of the country with seminars for participants. USSS (BIA) volunteers also staff a society table at major shows where conditions permit.
With 2000 members worldwide, the society welcomes all U.S. collectors who wish to learn more about U.S. stamps than merely accumulating them.. Always strong in stamp production methods, the USSS (BIA) has expanded its coverage to include sheet, coil, booklet and booklet panes of all U.S. stamps with detailed information on design, marginal markings and plate numbers.
