UN Errors Briefly Sold at NAPEX

The United Nations Postal Administration withdrew several of its Aug. 28 Vatican City UNESCO World Heritage stamps shortly after their release at NAPEX. The stamps incorrectly identified the staircase shown in its design.

The €1.25 Vienna stamp was issued with the inscription “Bramante-Treppe,” German for Bramante Staircase. The image, however, shows the Vatican Museums staircase designed by Giuseppe Momo and completed in 1932.

The same image and faulty inscription appeared on the 65¢ New York, 0.35-franc Geneva and €0.45 Vienna stamps contained in the prestige booklets.
